The libretto for Cosi fan tutte (or rather La scola degli amanti [The T School for Lovers] according to the original title by the author Lorenzo Da Ponte) was initially entrusted to Antonio Salieri, the prestigious maestro of the Imperial Chapel in Vienna, but he only actually set the two trios that open the action to music. What actually happened to cause Salieri to give up and allow La scola degli amanti to pass into the hands of Mozart is not known. Whatever happened, it resulted in the birth of Cosi fan tutte, a master- piece of formal perfection and fresh inspiration. First staged at the Burgtheater in Vienna on 26th January 1790, Cosi fan tutte was suspended after only five performances due to the death of the Emperor, Joseph II, when all the theatres closed out of mourning. Later, the new Emperor, Leopold II, who hated Da Ponte, didn't particularly like Mozart and eyed with suspicion the libertine, and just too libertarian, exchange of couples in the opera, did nothing to revi- ve it. It was only in the 1900s that Cosi fan tutte was finally recognised as one of Mozart's greatest works in theatres the world over.
